It was not until the 1930’s that the first recipes were written down for Key Lime Pie. Until then, everyone just knew how to make the pie. No fresh milk, no refrigeration, and no ice was available in the Keys until the arrival of tank trucks with the opening of the Overseas Highway in 1930.
The earliest published recipe for chocolate brownies appears to have been for “Bangor Brownies” back in the Boston Daily Globe (1905). Some contend they may have originated when baking powder was inadvertently left out of a chocolate cake batter, resulting in a ‘cake’ that didn’t rise but tasted great.
Despite the fact that chocolate has been around since 1100 B.C. and strawberries had been found growing wild in Italy as early as 234 B.C., it was not until a woman by the name of Lorraine Lorusso combined the two in the 1960’s in her little shop called the Stop N’ Shop in Chicago that Chocolate Covered Strawberries were born.
Bread pudding is a dish with very old roots. It evolved as a use for stale bread. Cooks from many cultures throughout history have been loathe to waste stale bread, so they invented many dishes, both savory and sweet, to utilize it.
Today, bread pudding is still made, but its current forms tend to be far more luxurious than their humble origins. Modern bread puddings often utilize fresh, gourmet breads such as brioche, and include expensive ingredients such as vanilla beans, bourbon, Gruyere cheese or pecans. Sweet bread puddings may be served with a variety of sauces.
